“Teaneck Festival of Arts” (TFOA) will be joining forces with the “Teaneck International Film Festival” (TIFF) this year which will take place from November 14th through the 16th in various locations throughout Teaneck. During the Festival, TFOA and TIFF will co-sponsor a special screening of the 1920 silent film “The Golem” with a live chamber orchestra performing an original film score composed by Tom Nazziola from "The BQE Project". The event will take place on Saturday, November 15 at 8pm at the Cedar Lane Cinemas in Teaneck.
In conjunction with the film, TFOA will host a juried art exhibit that is open to Teaneck residents and beyond, entitled “The Search for Heroic Beings” at The Teaneck Public Library during the month of November, 2008. In addition to the exhibit, a video will be made of the artwork that will premiere at the Meet the Artist Reception on Sunday, November 2nd from 3-5pm at the Teaneck Public Library and will also be shown prior to the screening of the “Golem” at Cedar Lane Cinemas on November 15. TFOA Art Exhibit Co-Curators are Liz Celotto, Deborah Ugoretz and Howard Berelson.
“Create” to cause, to come into being, as something unique that would not naturally evolve or is not made by ordinary processes.”- Random House College Dictionary
Theme: Whenever natural disasters, war, economic decline threaten, human beings of all cultures seek a superhuman protector, a miraculous being to save them from the threatened calamity. People have also fantasized about creating life from inanimate material, not only to emulate the gods but with the hope that through these creatures, society would be saved from the destructive forces of nature and the evil intentions of their fellow human beings. One of the most fabled folk characters that brilliantly personifies these attributes is the Golem- a figure made of clay who, according to the legend, was magically animated by Rabbi Loew of Prague to protect his threatened community. The tale of this creature generated other inventions such as Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein and the Superman Comics. These stories touch on themes of mysticism, science run amok, human hubris, political satire, salvation and deliverance from evil. There are many ways that creative individuals have approached these themes and we encourage you to summon up your own creative powers to address these issues.
